Jonah | Amy Kattenbelt | Inspired by another hobby

Good Morning UK Scrap Addicts, I am here to share with you my layout that was inspired by one of my other hobbies....Art Journalling.
For more than 10 years I avoided all things mixed media when I was scrapbooking. I discounted anything that used paint and sprays. I thought they were too scary as they were pretty unpredictable and messy.

Then, thanks to Shimelle's influence I tried finishing my layouts with a little controlled splatter of ink...and I loved how it looked. Slowly my confidence to use mixed media products grew and I learnt to embrace the curled pages and the whoops moments when something didn't turn out how I wanted.

Last year I started down the slippery slope of Art Journalling (a hobby that involves as much stash shopping as scrapbooking!). Now I absolutely love nothing more than sitting with an empty page in my journal and some tubes of paint and just playing about...sometimes I love the results and other times not so much.

I wanted to created a layout that was heavily influenced by some of my favourite art journal products. Here is what I pulled out to create my layout...
I picked my favourite colours of Golden Acrylic paint, scraps of papers (photocopied old family documents, book paper, music manuscript and a photo from a magazine), a stencil, black pen, tim holtz ephemera and word stickers, matte medium, a date stamp, some rub one and my heat gun.

I started by using clear gesso on a piece of 12x12 card stock and printing my photo on matte paper and cutting it out.

I then created a collage base using the scraps of paper with the matte medium. My favourite tool to do this is my hands...applying the matte medium (which I use as a glue) to the back of the scraps and then also to front once they are in place. I created a very rough diamond shape design to the right of the page for my photo to sit on, and a smaller triangle shape to the top left for my title. I made sure to leave plenty of white space.

I then used a flat brush, and my fingers to layer up my acrylic paints. I added pops of teal towards the end of the process, and also used a stencil brush with one of the paints and the leaf stencil. Something I'm still having to be mindful of is that often "less is more" When I was happy with the paint layers, I added some tissue paper that had been stamped on and layered that in with the paint. The black lines on the tissue gave me something to ground my photo on to. I then doodled black squiggly lines around the painted areas trying to emphasis the diamond and triangle shapes. I added some wings to my photo and stuck it to my layout.

I finished my layout with some very old teal rub ons, some phrase stickers, some star stickers and star enamel dots plus a couple of black heart puffy stickers.

I encourage you all to give something new a try...challenge yourself to do something you think isn't for you...it might turn out to be one of the best things you ever do!

Thanks for reading, be sure to head on over to our Facebook group where we will be sharing our new challenge at the start of June!

Orla Kiely | Kirei Baldwin | Inspired by another hobby

Hi UK Scrap Addicts!

Kirei here with my assignment for this month's theme which was to 'take inspiration from another hobby' and as I don't really do anything else crafty I looked to my love of reading and decided to make a mini book!

I went to see the Orla Kiely: A Life in Pattern exhibition at the Fashion and Textile Museum in Bermondsey in Sept 2018 and had these pics just waiting to go into a mini book... I already had the papers I wanted to use as had been saving them so it was just a matter of putting it all together!

I had bought some postcards from the exhibition so these became the front and back of my album. They were both backed with one of the patterned papers.

I cut three pages from the same patterned papers, and all the rest of the 'pages' were selected from the matching ephemera. There were quite a few tags so picked the largest of those to use with my photos. Some of the smaller ones I added for detail.

To add some texture to all of the pages and tags I used my sewing machine to stitch them with gold thread. I thought the stitching was a nice link to the fashion element of my photos.

I pulled out some gold hearts and yarn tassels from my stash and added them throughout.

I wrote my journaling onto strips of patterned paper which I then stitched onto one of the larger pages.

I don't know about you but I always keep brochures and tickets from any places I visit so wanted to include them too. The brochure was the perfect fit when folded in half and I mounted the ticket onto some patterned paper and stitched around the edges and this became another page in the mini book.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you've been inspired by the Creative Teams layouts this month.... do pop on over to the UK Scrap Addicts Facebook group and share how you've been inspired by this month's theme!

Happy scrapping!

Let's Eat | Jackie Ashton | Hobbies

Hello scrappers, hope you are all keeping well.

Jackie here, with my layout using this months theme - document hobbies on your page.

During lockdown I’ve return to my love of cooking, especially trying out new dishes and using different ingredients.  But along with me enjoying cooking, my son as been having a go, so I decided to document him making one of our recent meals.

Let’s Eat

I did this layout in 9x12 format so that I can add it to my Lockdown album.

I recently found out how to print 6 photographs on a 6x4 sheet via my computer without using an app on my phone, which saves me a lot of time, when choosing my photographs.

I found the perfect wood veneers in my stash, and added a rainbow as it now the symbol of the Lockdown.

I added some stamp details around the page and a few embellishment words and puffy stars.

So one of the good thing for me during the Lockdown is my returning love of cooking.

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you can join us on our Facebook page and join is with us this months and document one of your other hobbies other than from scrapbooking.

Till next time

Happy scrapping

Love this | Sam Ball | Inspired by Another Craft

During lockdown, many of us crafty people are either trying a new hobby or re-visiting one that we’d perhaps lost the love of for whatever reason.

Having studied Textile Design, I’d always had a love of fabric, frequently making my own clothes, soft furnishings and window treatments.

Like so many crafty hobbies, once I’d discovered scrapbooking, nothing really compared to my love of making layouts and so textiles took a back seat.

I recently volunteered to make scrubs for the NHS, which meant reaching for my beloved Bernina sewing machine. In more recent years, it’s been used to stitch on many, many layouts, so it was quite a novelty stitching onto actual fabric, both for me and my sewing machine too! In fact, it made me realise just how much I missed sewing, and I’ve already ordered a dressmaking pattern.

Recent events have also changed the way I scrap, not in terms of style, but I’ve always liked complete silence and never been one for background music. I’ve been listening to so much more music these last few weeks, so although it’s not a craft, I wanted to document this change in my scrapping habits too!

I’ve always loved music ledger paper, so I reached into my stash and found an aptly titled piece to go with the photo of my middle step-daughter and her best friend at their prom.

I backed each of the washing line dresses, but rather than use paper, I backed them with a cream fabric lining, which I then painted in an ombré effect to co-ordinate with the rest of the layout.

Machine stitching to the background paper was a further nod to my love of sewing, as was the lace detailed edge.

If you’re not aware, ever month at UK Scrap Addicts we have a different theme, great for kick starting your mojo, especially at times like these when some people are really struggling to be creative…

Be sure to share your layouts over on our Facebook page, or tag us on Instagram, and if you’re not feeling creative, perhaps it would help to share how this unprecedented situation has impacted on your creative vibe?

After all they do say that 'a problem shared is a problem halved!'

Rise & Shine | Lisa-Jane Johnson | Inspired by another hobby

Hi there, it's Lisa-Jane from Pretty My Page here today with my layout inspired by another hobby.  My other life is renovating, my garden, my house, furniture, everything!

I found this bag of chipboard pieces from the days when you couldn't buy matching die cut embellishments with a collection and I set about renovating them and saving them from the bin.

I adhered them to some papers and cut around them before neatening the edges with an emery board and some Distress Ink.

Finally I added a layer of Glossy Accents to give them a nice sheen.

While they dried I used silicone glue on the cut file (a cut and fold doily background by Paige Evans) to prevent it from laying flat in my albums.  Then I added the renovated chipboard pieces around the page to add pops of colour.

Finally I added a couple of die-cut pieces for my title and then finished off with some puffy dots from the same collection.

I definitely need to use this technique again because I have a lot more old chipboard where this lot came from!

One Year Until ... | Karen Moss | Inspired By Another Craft

Hello Karen here with my layout for this month's theme - to be inspired by another craft. The craft I have chosen is crochet.  My Nana taught me to crochet when I was very young but I have only taken it up again in the last few years.

For my page I crocheted three flowers and some leaves from this pattern.  I did make up my trim pattern as I went along and made it too long so would advise measuring more carefully than I did.  Here are some trim patterns similar to the one I did.

The papers I used were from Kaisercraft's Amathyst collection, which co-ordinated beautifully with the flowers.  I also added a die cut, vellum, group of butterflies and some Silhouette print and cut butterflies.

I finished my crochet flower cluster with some fussy cut flowers and some paper blooms.

You can see exactly how I constructed this page on our YouTube channel here.

If you would like to see what other crafts our talented ladies on the DT have been inspired by you can see on our Facebook page or follow our Instagram feed

I hope I have inspired you to try mixing your hobbies and look forward to showing you my next project.

Stay safe

Karen

Fabulous | Sheena Rowlands | Inspired by another craft

Hi there UK Scrap Addicts, Sheena here again x

For our challenge this month we are to create a layout inspired by another hobby. Over the years I've had a few different hobbies and still quilt, sew and crochet alongside my scrapbooking & Project Life.

For this page I decided to use Quilting as my inspiration.

Fabulous.

I decided to use a quilting type pattern as my layout background. I die cut lots of 3in circles from various Pink Paislee Paige Evans paper ranges then cut them into quarters.
I arranged them on the base & when I was happy stuck them down with a little adhesive before machine sewing them in place. This did take some time but I like the finished effect. On line you can find lots of quilting patterns that could be easily translated to paper crafting.

I didn't want to cover too much of the background up so I added my photo to one corner with various patterned paper layers and a doily beneath.

I added my title and various colour co-ordinating embellishments either side of my photo using foam pads to add depth.

I hope you feel inspired to try our challenge this month. Please share your creations with us over on our Facebook group.
Till next time x
