Totally Awesome | Amy Kattenbelt | More than one collection

Hi UK Scrap Addicts, Amy here sharing my layout that uses more than one collection.

This isnt something I often do these days, I find it far quicker and easier to work with just one collection at a time. But combining collections allows for more creativity and can really make your layouts unique.

I chose to use the 'boys rule' collection from Cocoa Vanilla Studio along with the Kaleidoscope collection by Vicki Boutin. I was careful in selecting papers from the same colour family - namely blues and greens. This made the job of combining the collections work well.

I feel I pretty much used half of one collection and half of the other, neither dominates the layout. I used little pops of bright magenta pink from the Vicki Boutin collection along with the pale grey starburst paper from Boys Rule.

I picked 3 circular elements, even though two are from one collection and one from the other, and added a little butterfly sticker to each.

Distressing the edges and using my tiny attacher to add some staples adds a little bit of detail on to a fairly simple layout.

I hope over the last month we have inspired you to try to step out side of the comfort zone of single collection layouts and try to mix things up a bit. Sleep Amongst The Stars / Di Willcox / Fussy Cutting

May is fussy cutting month for us in UKSA and I think it's fair to say, we're all trying to think creatively about what we fussy cut! A majority of the time it's the floral or butterfly papers that tend to be cut into as they make great embellishments and compliment photos and papers, so I've gone for something a bit different and chosen stars.

I had a cut file backing sheet from The Cocoa Vanilla Studio's Boys rule collection and cut out the stars, some individually and some linked together, and made a crescent/ moon shape with them. 

Before I stuck them down on my white background I used water based crayons and the packaging technique to add some subtle colour splotches. 

After the photo was matted and stuck in place, I sprinkled and stuck some sequins around the page to add a bit more texture and effect. I did have a bit of an accident with the glue and this can be seen in my process video (here)!

Lastly I used a Thickers letter guide to help shape the title around the 'moon'.

All that glitters is not gold…

Hi Everyone

Sam here, with my first layout as a DT member of the UKSA team…

If you hadn’t already noticed, the theme for April is ‘Sparkle’.

Now, I can’t deny that I have a real phobia of glitter – I think it’s because it reminds me of sand. Like sand, it gets everywhere, so it’s a scrapbooking product that I tend to avoid like the plague! I simply couldn’t face using any, so my ‘Sparkle’ was going to have to be introduce via some other means…

I found I’d got some Starlights paint, including White Gold, which I knew gave a true shimmery effect, so I decided that my layout would incorporate gold elements along with some co-ordinating sequins from my stash.

My eldest step-daughter is in New Zealand currently where this photo was taken. I thought the quirky seat on the wall that had become a painted swing was fabulous, along with the cupid and combinations of greens, teals and hot yellow. It’s not a colour combination that I’d usually scrap with, but was so inspired by it, I decided to dig deep into my scrapbooking stash and see what I could find.

To my delight, I realize that the Maggie Holmes ‘Carousel’ collection featured some of these tones. And, I’m sure that you can relate to just ‘saving a piece of paper’ because it’s too nice to use syndrome? I’d been suffering with that over the big top paper, but as it was just black and white, it meant that I could paint it to complement the photo and add sparkly details too!

I tend to mix white gesso with paint when I’m creating a background on a printed design, as it works in much the say way as preparing a background that’s going to be subjected to techniques such as the packaging one.

After fussy cutting the kites and the scallop detail for the big tops, I used sequins to add detail, with little French knots to each centre.

I found I’d got an unopened set of enamel charms, both of which were set into a gold metal, so this added to the sparkle along with my title.

Adventure Awaits | Sarah Costain | No Cardstock

Sarah here today with my take on the no cardstock challenge.

I love creating mixed media backgrounds so for this challenge I added clear gesso to a seascape patterned paper.  I could then build up layers of paints stamping and pastes on top.

To help my photo stand out from the busy background I used layers of textured material and distressed patterned paper behind it.

I added my title to the side of my photo to draw the eye across the page.

Lots of seashells and nautical elements added to the theme in the photo.

Some splashes of bronze and white ink over the layout tied it all in together.

Dream, Dream, Dream / Jackie Ashton / Paint

Hi Crafters,

Jackie here with my layout for this months theme - Paint.  I decided to do a mixture of two inks on my background.  

To add the colour to my background paper, I added oxide ink to a plastic sheet and then added water to the ink which turns it into a colour wash, which can then be added either by using the packaging technique, turning the plastic sheet over and placing it onto the cardstock or by using a paint brush.  The ink colours I used were Twisted Citron (green) Mustard Seed (yellow) and a small amount of Tumbled Glass (blue).

I kept my photo to the right of my page, so that the colour wash was visible.

I used Maggie Holmes - Willow Lane Collection that you can find at Hey Little Magpie, and added a Flair Badge also Hey Little Magpie.

The mini word stickers are from Simple Stories,

This is an easy technique to add some additional colour to your background, without the background details taking over the page.

Dinotastic! | RamblingsofGeo | 4x6 Photo

Hello everyone, Welcome to June's theme of 4x6 photos!

4x6 photo layouts, quite easy you would think... however when you document in a SmashBook it's so normal to ram loads of photos in it. Having the opportunity to only use one photo was somewhat of a challenge for me.

I picked a photo of my godchildren at a birthday party as i knew i had a couple of bits of memorabilia to bulk it out with. I used one single 4x6 photo, a leaflet of the party organisers, a cupcake topper, and lots, and LOTS of random embellishments.

Its quite a full on page full of embellishments, but i think i made it work..

Life is Good... / Sheena Rowlands / 6x4 photo

Hi there Scrap Addicts x Sheena here again.

This month we have been challenged to create using a 6x4 inch photo. It wasn't till I looked through my recent layouts did I realise that the photos I tend to scrap have got smaller in recent years. This could be because I tend to print them myself now.

Life is Good...

For this 12 x 12 layout I used a portrait photo of myself and layered it with patterned papers in shades of stone and blue to co ordinate with my photo.

Initially I added some stencilling and stamping to my background cardstock before adding machine stitching both in circles and over the patterned papers. I then cluster my embellishments in 3 places to lead your eye around the layout.

I finished my clusters with a few arrows and enamel dots in similar colours. Then added a Bramble Fox acrylic title, backed with paper to make it pop.

Fancy Dress | ScrappyNerdUK (Claire) | Monochrome

Hiya Friends....

Its been ages since I have been up for the UKScrapAddicts. But I'm back and super excited to share with you my layout based on this months theme of Monochrome.

I really went completely outside my comfort zone and chose to use red!!

I kept the design aspect fairly simple with almost a grid design as I knew I wanted to include lots of embellishments on my layout to really play on the monochromatic theme.

I grabbed some Simple Stories Project Life cards from my stash and just pulled the black and white and red ones to use for this layout. There was one that had a blue element on but I wasn't too worried as this could easily be covered with an embellishment .

I decided to almost make a page kit ready for this layout as I didn't want to be digging around in my stash to find items that would work together, especially as I was heavily restricted on the colour options.

I mixed in some ephemera from the same Simple Stories pack, some stickers from Shimelles 30 page sticker book (keeping to the red colours only), some wood veneer stars, chipboard from some older kits, some fussy cutting and finally some Tim Holtz tiny word stickers.

Wow - now breath!!!

After I had laid my cards into a 2x3 format across the page horizontally, I cut down the bottom cards to that they were only 2.5x3 inches.

I embellished on top of each of these cars whilst adding my photo to one and my title to another. I didn't really have any journalling for this as the title says exactly what the photo was about. (I need to get better at journalling on my layouts!!) Perhaps that might be an upcoming theme?!

 And here is the completed and finished layout. I was nervous about using read but this has definitely spurred me on to want to try those colours that I don't normally scrap with. Perhaps monochrome is the way forward!!

Dude ! Dude! / Jackie Ashton / Monochrome

Hi Scrappers, Jackie here with my blopgost for May - and going with this months theme for monochrome - I chose to use the blue as my base.  

As you can see from my layout below, my initial idea was to use black and white and add a touch of blue to my page, but my page didn't turn out like that.

I started the page by using the packaging technique with Tim Holtz Oxide ink in Broken China over the white cardstock. I also stamped some circles and messy-stitched circles to the background paper.

I then selected a selection of blue patterned papers and cut into different sizes, an did a simple cluster of paper stacked under my photograph.

I added some additional details by die cutting some star, and a die word and arrow from the same patterned papers I'd used for my paper stack.  

I also added a small cluster to the top of the page.
